How do you know it’s time for new windows?

Windows wear out slowly, so it’s easy to get used to their problems. A room that never quite warms up, a window that needs a shove to close or a sill that’s damp every morning are all signs that your windows aren’t doing their job any more.

  • Misting or condensation between the two panes of glass
  • Cold spots and draughts around the frames
  • Rot, flaking paint or soft spots in wooden frames
  • Handles and hinges that stick, slip or won’t lock
  • Traffic noise that’s hard to shut out
  • Yellowed or brittle older uPVC

If several of these sound familiar, replacing the windows is usually better value than repairing them one problem at a time.

Performance

What do modern windows improve?

Today’s windows are a big step up from those fitted even 15 or 20 years ago.

Less heat loss

Double-glazed units with coated glass and gas-filled gaps help keep rooms at a steady temperature.

Less outside noise

Well-sealed frames and modern glass cut down on traffic and street noise.

Better security

Modern frames and multi-point locks are much harder to force than older windows.

More daylight

Slimmer frames and clear modern glass let more light into each room.

Less condensation

The inner pane stays warmer, so you get far less of the streaming condensation common with old glazing.

A fresher look

New windows instantly smarten up the outside of a house.

What happens on installation day?

Tom starts by protecting the floor and furniture around each window. The old frame is removed carefully to limit damage to plaster and brickwork. The new frame is then fitted level and square, fixed securely and sealed inside and out.

Opening windows are adjusted so they close evenly and lock properly. The area is cleaned up, and you’re shown how everything works before the job is finished.

How much disruption should you expect?

Many people are surprised how quickly a single window can be changed. Each opening is only left empty for a short time, and rooms are back in use soon after. For larger jobs, you’ll get a clear plan so you know which rooms are being worked on and when.

Can windows be replaced in winter?

Yes. Windows can be fitted all year round. Because each window is changed one at a time, an opening is only exposed for a short while before the new frame goes in, so the house doesn’t lose much heat. Winter is also when a lot of people decide to replace their windows, because draughts and condensation are hardest to ignore. Very heavy rain or high winds can delay work on the day, and if that happens a new date is arranged.

If you’re worried about the cold, mention it when booking. Rooms can be worked on one at a time, so the rest of the house stays warm. If you haven’t chosen a frame yet, our uPVC windows and timber windows pages compare the options.

Do replacement windows need Building Regulations approval?

Yes. In England, replacement windows have to meet Building Regulations. These set minimum standards for energy efficiency and, in some rooms, for ventilation and emergency escape.

The work also needs to be certified, either through a competent person scheme or by your local building control team. When you ask for a quote, check how certification will be handled for your job. You’ll need the paperwork if you sell the house.

FAQs

Window installation questions

How long does window installation take?

It depends on how many windows you’re replacing and the state of the openings. Smaller jobs can often be done in a day. For bigger projects you’ll get a clear timescale up front and regular updates as the work goes on.

Will new windows cut down on noise?

Modern double glazing in well-sealed frames usually reduces outside noise compared with old single glazing or failing double glazing. The difference is often most noticeable on busy roads.

Should I choose uPVC or timber windows?

uPVC is low maintenance, good value and insulates well. Timber has natural character and suits period homes, but needs repainting every few years. Our uPVC and timber window pages go into more detail.

Is there much mess?

Some dust is unavoidable when old frames come out. Dust sheets are used, and the work area is cleaned before the job is signed off.

Do I need to be at home during the work?

Someone will need to let Tom in and see the finished windows before he leaves. If that’s difficult, mention it when you get in touch and a time can be agreed that works for you.
