Why choose a uPVC door?
uPVC doors became popular because they’re dependable. They don’t rot, they don’t need painting and they cope well with the kind of weather that leaves wooden doors looking tired after a few winters.
They’re a natural fit for back doors, side doors and utility rooms, where practicality matters more than a statement finish. Many homes already have uPVC windows, so a uPVC door is also the simplest way to get a neat, matching look.
Where uPVC doors work best
- Back and side doors that get used all day
- Homes with uPVC windows you want to match
- Rental properties where low upkeep matters
- Jobs where getting the most from your budget is the priority

Benefits
What you get with a uPVC door
Good value
uPVC is usually the most affordable external door, leaving more of your budget for other jobs.
Easy care
No sanding, painting or varnishing. A wash with soapy water keeps it clean.
Fewer draughts
A well-fitted, properly sealed uPVC door helps keep the heat in and the cold out.
Weatherproof
uPVC won’t rot or swell, so the door keeps opening and closing smoothly.
Modern locks
Multi-point locks secure the door along its full height.
Choice of finishes
Classic white, a colour, or a woodgrain effect to suit your home.
Types of uPVC door
uPVC is used for more than standard front and back doors. These are the main types to choose from.
Front and back doors
Single doors with solid or glazed panels. A back door with more glass brings extra light into a kitchen or utility room.
French doors
A pair of doors that open outwards from the middle. They’re a popular way to connect a living room or extension to the garden, and side panels can be added to bring in more light.
Bi-fold doors
Bi-folds fold back in sections, so you can open up most of a wall in summer. They’re often used in extensions and garden rooms.
Should you choose uPVC or composite?
This is the question we’re asked most about doors. Both are low maintenance and both perform well when properly fitted, but they suit different needs.
Choose uPVC if you want a reliable, cost-effective door, especially for the back or side of the house, or if you’re matching uPVC windows.
Choose composite if it’s your main entrance and you want the most solid feel, the best insulation and a convincing wood-grain finish.
Tom can talk through both when you ask for a quote. Our door installation guide also compares all three materials side by side.
What makes a uPVC door secure?
The door panel is only part of the story. How secure a uPVC door is depends mainly on its hardware and how well it’s fitted.
Multi-point locks
A multi-point lock secures the door at several points along the frame when you lift the handle and turn the key. This makes it much harder to force than a door with a single lock.
Anti-snap cylinders
The cylinder is the part your key goes into. Older cylinders can be snapped to break in. An anti-snap cylinder is designed to resist this.
Glass and hinges
Toughened or laminated glass is harder to break than standard glass. Hinges and glazing that can’t be removed from outside add another layer of protection.
The door also has to be fitted properly. A door that’s out of line won’t lock fully, which leaves gaps in its security however good the lock is. Our door installation guide explains how a new door is fitted and adjusted.
How to look after a uPVC door
Clean the frame and panel every few months with warm soapy water, and avoid scouring pads or solvent cleaners. Check that the drainage slots at the bottom of the frame are clear. Once or twice a year, put a little light oil on the hinges and lock so everything keeps moving freely.

FAQs
uPVC door questions
Is a uPVC door secure enough for a front door?
A modern uPVC door with a multi-point lock and a good cylinder offers sound everyday security. If security is your main concern for the front of the house, compare it with a composite door too.
Do uPVC doors come in colours other than white?
Yes. As well as white, uPVC doors come in a range of colours and woodgrain-effect finishes, which is useful if you’re matching coloured windows.
How do I clean a uPVC door?
Warm soapy water and a soft cloth are all you need. Avoid abrasive cleaners and solvents, as they can dull or mark the surface.
Can a new uPVC door match my windows?
Matching existing uPVC windows is one of the most common reasons people choose a uPVC door. Mention the colour and style of your windows when you get in touch.
Can you fit uPVC French doors?
Yes. French doors are a popular way to open a room up to the garden. Send us the size of the opening and a photo if you can, and Tom will advise on the options.
